Storing Bulk Soap Nuts

If you plan to resell the bulk soap nuts you buy here at Wholesale Bulk Soap Nuts you’ll want to ensure that they are properly stored so that they are in top condition for your retail customer. These same storage points relate to those of you who are buying soap nuts in bulk for personal use or to include in homemade green cleaning products, shampoos, skin care, or natural soaps.

Although many sites promote that their soap nuts are packaged with a plastic lining to retain freshness soap nuts do not get stale or become rancid. Only products with oils in them do that, so this is not a concern when storing soap nuts. In fact soap nuts can be stored indefinitely if you consider a few things.

  • Soap nuts should be stored in a low humidity moderate heat area.
  • Soap nuts should not be exposed to excess moisture
  • Soap nuts are best stored in a container or package that allows air flow and does not hold moisture
  • If soap nuts become sticky open the package and spread them out onto a flat surface like a shallow cardboard box and seperate them. Returning them to their packaging after they are no longer sticky.
  • Properly stored soap nuts should be slightly tacky (like dried syrup feels).

One thing that many sites will promote is that their soap nuts are so fresh they are sticky or soggy. Stickiness or sogginess in soap nuts is not indicative of freshness. It indicates that the soap nuts have been stored in a place that is too warm and humid. All a soap nuts needs in order to have the saponins become active is moisture. Even if that moisture is only in the form of humidity.

Once the soap nuts are exposed to moisture the saponins begin to release and in the case of being stored in a humid area the saponin will gather on the surface of the soap nut. That’s what the stickiness is.

The greatest problem with sticky soap nuts is that the user will get inconsistent results because a high concentration of the saponin has wicked onto the surface of the berry and will be released en masse into the first load of laundry.

Subsequent loads of laundry will have a lower amount of saponin released and it is likely that the user will get less loads of laundry from sticky soap nuts. There is also nothing more annoying for a customer than to have to stand in the laundry room prying soap nuts apart in order to measure the proper amount for their laundry.

So if you plan to resell your bulk soap nuts be sure to store them in a climate controlled area if possible. If this is not possible them regularly check the soap nuts to be sure that no condensation has built up inside the bulk bags.

Now a brief word about retail packaging for those of you who will retail the bulk soap nuts you buy from us.  It is a good idea to package your soap nuts in muslin, burlap, or other natural fiber bags that will allow air flow, evaporation of moisture, and can be re-used by your customer. This type of packaging is in line with the sustainable aspect of soap nuts and something your customers will appreciate. We don not recommend that you line the natural fiber bag with any sort of plastic or other material that will reduce air flow. You do not want your customers to get a giant chunk of soap nuts that is so stuck together it takes them hours to pull them apart for use.

We will be offering a selection of muslin bags in our Wholesale Bulk Soap Nuts Store.
